San Jose Mega Millions winner comes forward
SAN JOSE, Calif. —The man who purchased a lottery ticket worth $324 million in San Jose has finally come forward, state officials announced Friday.
According to state lottery officials,Steve Tran walked into their San Jose office on Thursday with a ticket containing the winning numbers -- 8, 14, 17, 20, 39 and a Mega number of 7.
Tran told lottery officials that he and his family like to visit San Jose because there is a large Vietnamese community there, plus they can eat and shop.
On the Saturday before the drawing, they stopped by Jennifer’s Gift Shop, which is located at 1818 Tully Road and bought five Quick Pick® tickets.
However, he did not know he had won the lottery until early Monday morning because he added that ticket to a pile of other Lottery tickets he had purchased in multiple other towns while making his runs as a delivery driver.
According to Tran, the entire lot ended up “Just sitting in my house, on top of my drawer.”
Tran then took his family on vacation without checking the tickets.
Upon returning home, Tran said he "woke up in the middle of the night" and remembered: "I think I went to San Jose."
He checked his tickets at 3 a.m., discovered he had won and gave his wife a smile and a massive hug.
Tran also called his boss. He left a message that went something like this: “I’m really sorry boss. I hit the jackpot. I don’t think I’m going to come in today, tomorrow, or ever.”
Tran shares the prize with another jackpot winner in Georgia. Split between the two tickets, it comes to a total of $324 million per winning ticket. The cash equivalent for each ticket is $173.8 million before federal taxes. Tran has 60 days to select his payment option.
