Mùa xuân năm 1989, hơn một triệu sinh viên và công nhân Trung Quốc đã đóng chiếm quảng trường Thiên An Môn ở Bắc Kinh để mở màn cho phong trào phản đối lớn nhất trong lịch sử nước Trung Quốc cộng sản. Sáu tuần đấu tranh đã bị dập tắt trong cuộc đàn áp đêm ngày 3 rạng sáng ngày 4 tháng 6/1989.
